After becoming fed up with the violence that is happening in Chicago over 100 brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. gathered in the snow to hold an anti-violence rally in the city last month and Chicago rapper, Chance The Rapper, noticed that they were walking through the neighborhood he grew up in and showed them some love.

Chance took to Twitter and posted the following tweet calling what they were doing “mans work”.

Did You Know Martin Luther King Jr. Personally Convinced ‘Star Trek’s’ Lt. Uhura To Stay On The Show?

Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. was a big Star Trek fan and that in the 1960s he personally convinced Nichelle Nichols, the African-American actress who played Lieutenant Uhura to not leave the show because of what her role meant to Black Americans.

Nichols played Uhura on the original Star Trek and was revolutionary because she portrayed the first black, female character who wasn’t a stereotype on television. After finishing the first season of the show, she was getting so many offers from the theater world that she decided to quit the show because she wanted to follow her dream of being a famous Broadway singer. She went to the series’ creator, Gene Roddenberry, on Friday and gave him her resignation letter he took it but told her to think about it and not make her final decision until the next Monday.

“On Saturday night, I went to an NAACP fundraiser, I believe it was, in Beverly Hills,” Nichols told NPR in 2011. “And one of the promoters came over to me and said, Ms. Nichols, there’s someone who would like to meet you. He says he is your greatest fan.

And I’m thinking a Trekker, you know. And I turn, and before I could get up, I looked across the way and there was the face of Dr. Martin Luther King smiling at me and walking toward me. And he started laughing. By the time he reached me, he said, yes, Ms. Nichols, I am your greatest fan. I am that Trekkie.”

Dr. King then changed her whole perspective on quitting:

“‘Nichelle, whether you like it or not, you have become an symbol,” she said he told her during a Reddit Ask Me Anything interview earlier this year. “If you leave, they can replace you with a blonde haired white girl, and it will be like you were never there. What you’ve accomplished, for all of us, will only be real if you stay.’ That got me thinking about how it would look for fans of color around the country if they saw me leave. I saw that this was bigger than just me.”

Nichols went back to Gene Roddenberry on Monday and told him she wanted to stay and the rest is history. And that is the story of how Alpha Phi Alpha’s Martin Luther King Jr. saved the first fictional black character in outer space.

Seven Reasons You Shouldn’t Donate Your Old Greek Paraphernalia

Donating and giving to charity is a universal value of Black greekdom but when it comes to giving away your old greek apparel, there needs to be an exception made.

Now don’t get us wrong, we at WatchTheYard.com are all for giving someone in need the shirt off your back, but when it comes to recycling your old paraphernalia we advise that you either give the clothes to someone in your organization or throw them away completely.

When you donate your letters, they can end up in a thrift store, Goodwill, or vintage shop and people who know nothing about NPHC culture may end up buying them because they are good shirts/coats or simply look cool. This is not their fault at all, it is your fault for putting these items in their hands.

There is not much more need for explanation than that. We will let the following seven pictures do the talking…

The Father Of African-American Art History Made This Painting To Commemorate Alphas In The Military

If you have been to Howard University or have read The History of Alpha Phi Alpha, A Development in College Life, by Bro. Dr. Charles H. Wesley there is a chance that you may recognize the following memorial tribute to brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha who served in the US armed forces.

Created by Alpha Phi Alpha Bro. James A. Porter and entitled “To Our Heroic Brothers”, the piece gives tribute to those who have served the US military.  Brother Porter is known to many as the “father of African American art history,” and he left a strong cultural and educational legacy that is carried on at Howard University even until today.

This painting holds much weight because Bro. Porter was the first scholar to provide a systematic, critical analysis of African-American artists and their works of art. Being an artist himself, he provided a unique and critical approach to the analysis of the work. In 1943, he published Modern Negro Art, the first comprehensive study in the United States of African-American art. Porter decisively placed African-American artists within the framework of American art.

Dedicated to educating and writing about African-American artists, Porter set the foundation for artists and art historians to probe and unearth the necessary skills essential to their artistic and scholarly endeavors.

Below you will see a picture of Brother James A. Porter presenting his painting at Alpha Phi Alpha’s 30th General Convention on December 1944, in New Jersey. Click on the arrow below to see more pictures of the piece.

Alpha Phi Alpha And Alpha Kappa Alpha Members Just Marched Through Pittsburgh Protesting Violence

Members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. are fed up with the violence in Pittsburgh’s Hill District so they gathered along with a group of men, women and children marched through the streets on Saturday morning to peacefully push back against violence.

“We’re sick and tired of the gun violence,” John Ayers, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, told WPXI News at the Freedom From Violence March . “Every day kids are shooting each other down, and so we’re just fed up with it and, you know, we just want to let the kids know that this is how we feel about it and we’re opening up our voice and we’re saying ‘stop.’”

According to reports, the march was followed by a resource fair at the Hill House.

“We want to encourage the kids that they need to get their education, because their education is much more powerful than toting around an AK-47,” Ayers told the station.

We at WatchTheYard.com would like to commend these brothers and sisters for doing this march. We would also like to encourage other black greeks across the nation to hit the streets with their chapters and make it known that violence will not be tolerated in our communities!
