A Group Of Alphas From Virginia Union University Documented Their Trip To Bring Water To Flint, MI

Spring 15 initiates of the Gamma chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Jason Smart-El, Douglas Green & Avon Bryant, recently packed a car full of water and drove all the way from Richmond, VA to Flint, MI to drop off clean water to the city.

Jason Smart-El not only is a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha, but he also happens to be Mister Virginia Union University 2015-2016. He started raising money to help Flint in January,

“I was stunned to see not too many people taking the lead to want to help all of these families in need so I decide to take initiative and do what I can,” he told WatchTheYard.com.

After driving across the country for more than 10 hours, the brothers arrived in Flint and with the help of a local resident who went by the name of K, they went door to door delivering cases and gallons of water to as many families as possible.

“While doing so we were able to speak with families to see how this crisis has effected their lives and family. We also took a tour of Flint to see how it actually looked and not how the media portrayed it,” Smart-El told WatchTheYard.com.  “It was crazy to see all the houses that were abandoned, schools and stores that were closed down. It honestly looked like a ghost town. I took my camera with me to take video clips and pictures and created a YouTube video so that people will be able to see what I experienced. I believe that you must be the change you wish to see so hopefully what I did will influence others to do the same.”

BuzzFeed teamed up with the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to teach a wider audience about the history of Black fraternities and stepping and the outcome was pure GREATNESS.

For one of their shows called The Try Guys, a group of BuzzFeed staff members went down to USC to meet with the Alpha Delta chapter of the fraternity who gave them some training, taught them a step and then included them in their step show in front of the campus.

We’ve got to say that these brothers were some great mentors because by the end of the training and by the time the performance came along, the BuzzFeed staff held it down. Shouts out to the brothers of A-PHI-A!

Why The Alpha Phi Alpha Step Show From “School Daze” Is So Important To Black Greek Culture

Do you remember when the Alphas got on stage and performed a step show in Spike Lee’s “School Daze”?

For many people, this was the first time they had ever seen a step show and thus we think it is a very important part of Black Greek history. Before the movie came out, Black Greek stepping as an art form had not been shown on big screens and this brought the culture to a wide audience of Americans and future college students who otherwise would have had no idea about NPHC fraternities, sororities or stepping. Just think about the impact that this step show scene probably had on young boys who would later go to college and become Alphas or go Greek in general.

“This movie is the reason I wanted to attend an HBCU at such an early age and I found out recently that the Frat speaking is one my parents. Go head Dr. ROSS!!! 006!!” Corey Sheffield wrote about the step show. “The first time I ever saw a black fraternity was in this film,” another commenter wrote.

We at WatchTheYard.com would like to thank Spike Lee for creating this scene and the Alpha Rho chapter Alphas from Morehouse who performed this step. Without it, WatchTheYard.com might not be here today.

Now our question for you: Where were you the first time you saw “School Daze”? Let us know in the comment section below!

Every year, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. hosts its Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest in which collegiate members demonstrate their oratorical skills.

The contestants compete first at the chapter level, with the winner competing at the state, regional and general convention. According to the fraternity, “the purpose of the Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest is to identify problems or special topics of interest within society and determine how the problem or topic relates to the goals and objectives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.”

The theme of this last year’s 93rd General Convention  was “Modern Media and its Effect on Black America” and we at WatchTheYard.com have video of  Bro. Benjamin Baker of the Omicron Kappa Chapter at Auburn who placed first in the state, regional, and national contest giving his speech.

These Alphas From Tuskegee University Did A “Black Stormtrooper” Step Show That Will Blow You Away!

[Originally posted on 12/1/15]

The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha at Tuskegee University did a Star Wars step show just in time for the release of  the new movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Ever since the release of the trailer for the movie there has been some racist backlash because one of the main characters, a black man, played by John Boyega is seen wearing a stormtrooper outfit.

This does not seem to be bothering actor Boyega, who called the negativity “unnecessary” in an interview with V Magazine. “I’m in the movie, what are you going to do about it? You either enjoy it or you don’t. I’m not saying get used to the future, but what is already happening. People of color and women are increasingly being shown on-screen. For things to be whitewashed just doesn’t make sense.”

Well just to make the racists mad, it looks like the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha at Tuskegee hit the stage for their homecoming step show as 10 black stormtroopers!Screen Shot 2015-12-15 at 3.24.22 PM

Now this is something everyone needs to see!

In 2011, Rainforest Films produced a television documentary for BET about the story of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s fraternity days as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. The documentary, which is narrated by Hill Harper gives a never before seen look at first hand accounts by Dr. King’s friends and fellow fraternity brothers on what he was like as a 23-year-old divinity student in Boston and 1952 Alpha pledgee as well as what he was like after he crossed.

Along with personal stories from Dr. King’s associates, the documentary also includes rare excerpts from Dr. King’s speech at the 50th Anniversary of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first and only time he spoke at an Alpha convention.
